Trump mocks 'low IQ' Al Green as House votes to censure Democrat over outburst

 March 6, 2025

The House voted Thursday to formally reprimand Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green for heckling President Trump during his speech to a joint session of Congress.

10 Democrats sided with Republicans on the final vote to censure Green, who heaped fresh embarrassment on a weak and divided Democratic party with his outburst during Tuesday night's address. Lawmakers had previously voted to advance the censure motion 211-209, setting the stage for Green's dramatic rebuke.

Al Green's outburst

Within moments of Trump taking the podium Tuesday, Green stood up and began shouting at the president, who was in the middle of touting his historic electoral mandate.

77-year-old Green, waving his cane in anger, insisted that Trump did not have a mandate to cut Medicaid.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) then ordered the House Sergeant at Arms to escort Green out of the chamber after he ignored repeated warnings to behave himself.

"He chose to deliberately violate House rules in a manner that we think is probably unprecedented in history -- interrupting a message of a president of the United States, who is an honored guest," Johnson said ahead of the censure vote.

Democrats in disarray

Green is an infamous liberal rabblerouser who has repeatedly attempted to impeach Trump, filing articles of impeachment as recently as last month.

Rep. Green's latest stunt comes at a time when the Democratic party is struggling to oppose a second-term Trump and his bold agenda of reform.

Democrats' feeble display of defiance Tuesday night was widely criticized, including by frustrated Democrats who said the grandstanding hurt the party's image.

The House voted 224-198 to formally censure Greene, prompting more political theater from members of the Democratic opposition, who began singing the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" in protest. Ahead of the censure vote, Green said he had no regrets about his conduct.

"I would do it again," he said. "I am not angry with the speaker. I am not angry with the officers. I am not upset with the members who are going to bring the motions or resolutions to sanction. I will suffer the consequences," Green told ABC News.

Meanwhile, Trump dismissed Green as a "low IQ individual" and a liability to his party in an interview with Fox News Digital.

"Nobody takes him seriously," Trump told Fox News Digital. "He is an embarrassment to Congress but a much bigger embarrassment to the Democrats."
