Sen. Fetterman does not support Biden's proposed Israel ceasefire deal

 June 30, 2024

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman has taken a number of positions over the past year that have set him apart from colleagues in his party.

One of the latest stances that Fetterman has taken revolves around his stance on the situation in Israel.

According to The Times of Israel, during a recent visit to the country, Fetterman made it clear that he fully supports the country's leadership and their mission in striking back at Hamas.

Fetterman also took shots at President Joe Biden for withholding certain types of munitions Israel can use to make their counterattack more successful.

What did he say?

The senator's visit to Israel generated plenty of headlines, as he made it clear that he opposes any ceasefire deal that would ultimately leave Hamas terrorists in charge.

"I fully support the prime minister’s idea that he can never allow a permanent ceasefire [if] Hamas is allowed to be functional," the Pennsylvania Democrat said.

"That’s my red line on that," Fetterman said. "I could never support Israel being bullied into an artificial kind of permanent ceasefire against an enemy like Hamas."

Ongoing discussions regarding what a ceasefire deal might look like have been a top priority.

The outlet noted:

The Biden proposal reportedly provides for a temporary ceasefire in the first phase of the deal, to be extended into “a sustainable calm (cessation of military operations and hostilities permanently)” in the second phase. However, Netanyahu has repeatedly denied that the proposal provides for ending the war before Israel achieves its two declared goals of destroying Hamas and bringing home all the hostages.

Like many others, Fetterman isn't a fan of Biden's approach, and continued to support Israel's vow to wipe Hamas completely from Gaza.

"Meaningful peace"

Fetterman doubled down, noting that he doesn't believe "meaningful peace" can occur under Biden's proposed plan.

"There will never be any meaningful peace as long as Hamas is allowed to occupy [Gaza]," said Fetterman. "And Gaza will need to be rebuilt. And how could anybody think that’s possible if that organization is there?"

"How can you possibly rebuild Gaza when those resources must be flowing through Hamas?" he added.

Fetterman's stance on the issue is a noticeable break from most in his party.
