Hollywood donors are threatening to pull support after President Joe Biden’s abysmal performance during Thursday’s presidential debate, Breitbart reported. The 81-year-old Democrat spoke incoherently, sounded weak, and appeared to freeze up.
The Democratic Party has enjoyed the undying loyalty and support from the entertainment industry for decades. Now several of them are abandoning ship after the debate.
Biden stumbled over his words several times and couldn’t even deliver his closing remarks. Even the staunchest Democrats couldn’t deny that Biden crumbled while attempting to spar with former President Donald Trump.
This fact has sent leftists of all stripes into a panic. However, Hollywood donors, speaking anonymously to Variety, are threatening to turn off the money spigot if he doesn’t “drop out.”
Power of the Purse
The desperation is palpable in the entertainment industry after the presidential debate revealed Biden’s obvious struggles. With only five months to go before Election Day, there is an urgency to replace him.
Hollywood donors are on the verge of wielding power of the purse to do just that. One anonymous source said there was a “sense” in Hollywood “that the money dried up last night about 10 minutes into the debate.”
Another anonymous source said that, “With all the text chains I’m on, people are basically like, ‘If he doesn’t drop out, we’re not giving any more money to Democrats or the Democratic Party.’ It’s like super intense,” the source added.
This is a stark contrast to the usual treatment from the left. The Biden campaign recently raked in $28 million through a fundraiser with superstars like Julia Roberts, George Clooney, and Jimmy Kimmel.
Now there are whispers that several big donors have pulled out of Friday’s fundraiser at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. If Biden loses that crowd, he’s all but sunk.
Replacing Biden
It’s not just Hollywood donors who are abandoning Biden. According to a Morning Consult poll shared with Axios, 60% of voters believe Biden “definitely” or “probably” should be replaced.
Unfortunately for the Democrats, it isn’t that simple. Speaking to Reuters, Brooking Institute senior fellow Elaine Kamarck laid out the complex process.
“The Democratic Party has had no real Plan B for Biden as its presidential candidate,” Kamarck said. “He ran virtually unopposed for the party's presidential nomination this year,” the Democratic National Committee member added.
Kamarck, who authored a book on the presidential nomination process called “Primary Politics,” said Biden has options. He could step down now or be pushed aside by a candidate who could capture his delegates. If he backs away after the convention in August, the Democratic National Committee would vote on his replacement.
Perhaps the Hollywood elite and the Democrats think they can pull off this swap with ease. Unfortunately for them, the damage is done even if they can get Biden out before November.
