The Democratic National Convention will kick off next week. It will be held in Chicago, Illinois from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22.
Given the massive sea change within the ranks of the Democratic Party, one can only presume that the original plan for the convention has changed to a significant and profound degree now that Vice President Kamala Harris is the party's nominee.
Reports indicated that a large number of Democrat power players will be in attendance at the upcoming convention, including former President Barack Obama, who reportedly wasn't so keen on handing Harris the nomination.
Some details regarding the convention schedule were made public, including who might be in attendance and what the theme of the convention could look like.
The official DNC website offered some insight as to what's taking place next week at the convention.
"During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Democrats will gather in Chicago to rally behind our Democratic nominees for President and Vice President of the United States, celebrate our achievements over this past term, and chart a path for the future," the DNC website states.
"Democrats from across the country will tell our story directly to the American people as we come together to energize, organize, and mobilize to win."
Naturally, before President Joe Biden was ousted by his own party last month, the elderly president was set to accept the official nomination and announce his intentions for a second term. That all changed, and now the president is expected to lead off the convention and focus on his and Harris's "accomplishments."
However, given the low popularity and polling numbers of Harris and Biden within their own party, the DNC is calling in the big dogs.
The outlet noted:
Sources indicate that former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will speak on Aug. 20, but when they will speak has not yet been confirmed. Some sources also suggest that former first lady Michelle Obama and former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may make speeches.
Celebrities have recently mobilized to boost Harris's popularity. Just weeks ago, it was in the gutter and nobody liked her, now she's being treated as the savior of the party, for the ones who still buy into it.
While it's not known which celebrities will be in attendance this year, the outlet noted some possibilities based on who has already endorsed Harris publicly.
Several A-list celebrities have endorsed Harris, including P!nk, who has joined Zoom rallies for Harris; Barbra Streisand, who endorsed Harris on X; and Charli XCX, who lent her “brat summer” movement to Harris in a show of support, per Newsweek. Any of these celebrities may make appearances at the Democratic National Convention as part of the Harris campaign’s effort to attract Gen Z.
The party will also have to contend with pro-Palestinian protesters, who are expected to make a big splash at the convention. Only time will tell how crazy it gets.
